Italy v Spain Euro 2016 Preview

Well, well, well. I don’t think anyone expected a game of this magnitude in the first knockout phase of Euro 2016!

When the Italians looked to be topping the group ahead of Belgium they probably thought that they’d be playing Croatia or Czech Republic next. Don’t get me wrong, Croatia especially would be a tough game (although they were pathetic against Portugal as it was). What they didn’t expect was for Croatia to beat Spain in the final group game!

Spain will come into the game with less confidence as normal. The world will have watched Croatia get at them and secure the win last week. The view that Spain are unbeatable in this competition are over for the team that have won this twice in a row.

Spain have also thrown themselves into the ‘harder’ part of the draw. Whoever wins this one will play Germany in the next round which could be a cracker – it’d certainly be worthy of a final. Either way they wont feel like they are nailed on to win.

asleepUnfortunately that’s why I think it’ll be an edgy game. Italy impressed everyone in their first game v Belgium when they won 2-0. However I think it was because they were seen as the underdogs in that game against a team fancied to go all the way. They have not impressed too much since that point though and have gone back into their defensive shell.

They will know that they have to flood their midfield with defensive players to stop Spain moving the ball around them. For that reason they’ll probably play one up front, pack the back 4 and try and nick a goal from a set piece.

I can certainly see this going to extra time or being pinched by a single goal. Get your money on under 2.5 goals folks. Could be a long night!
