Can England Confirm Top Spot?

England go into their final group game at Euro 2016 knowing that a win will secure top spot. The big question will be from their fans is ‘can they see it through’?

england v wales latest betting offersAfter a number of tournaments where England mess up and play decent teams in the knockout phase we can’t be sure! The signs are there that England have a decent football team and they have played some good football at times. There is also though the thought that the defence isn’t quite up to scratch and the manager is tactically poor.

The situation is as follows for England. Win and they top the group. Draw and they will go through in at least second place should Wales beat Russia. And lose? Well they will finish third in the group most likely unless Wales draw their game. They’d be second then. Confused? You should be.

The problem that England have is that if they do finish second they’ll play a team that finished second in another group. Finish third and they’ll no doubt face Germany, which they’ll want to avoid at all costs.

euro 2016 enhanced oddsThe obvious tactic for the English is therefore to go for it against the Slovaks who looked quite good against Russia. I guess the rush for Vardy and Sturridge to play will be huge from the fans but I don’t think Hodgson will play both. It would be a shock to me if he did not play Kane but I would not be surprised to see Vardy up there replacing Sterling. Sterling has been very poor and needs to be taken out of the firing line to stop the abuse he is getting from his own fans.

It’s a shame really that England didn’t hold on for the win against Russia as they’d be guaranteed top spot by now. However they really did get out of jail against the Welsh on Thursday with that late win, so I guess it equals out in the end as they say.

I personally think that England will squeeze a win out but they won’t get it all their own way. Hopefully we will also see Wales get a win against Russia to guarantee two British sides in the 2nd stage.
